Portland, Oregon, began as a clearing on the west bank of the Willamette River in 1844. The new city was incorporated in 1851 and prospered because of its advantageous location near the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers, among other factors. Absolom Hallock (1826-1892) was a mechanic, draftsman, civil engineer and surveyor. From the guide to the Absolom Hallock papers, 1851-1892, (Oregon Historical Society Research Library) Hallock was born in Utica, N.Y., and was trained as a cabinet maker, draftsman, surveyor, and civil engineer.
